Keep Their Name Alive

Operation Desert Storm started in my 16th year. I remember being at a friends house watching the war happen right in front of our eyes and we were both terrified. There were rumblings around school that the draft could make its way back and that there was a possibility that we could be drafted. That scared the crap out of us.

About a week later, I remember seeing one of my grandfathers who served in both the Navy and Army during WWII. He asked me the question I was most terrified at hearing, “What branch of the military are you going into?” Much to his disappointment I told him that I wasn’t going to join any branch. He asked if I was scared and I said no. He knew better…he could probably see the terror on my face.

I never believed there was a good reason for war and still don’t. However, I want to share my appreciation to the men and women who put their life on the line and the ones that paid the ultimate price.

Without their sacrifice we would not have the freedom that we currently have. So, how do we repay them repay them for their sacrifice?

Here are a few ways to make sure their sacrifice was not made in vain:

  1. We stand up for freedom in this country. This means all freedoms, not cherry picking the ones you like. As long as you stay away from children and you are not hurting others, go ahead.

  2. We give everything to each and every day. Do your best and don’t be lazy.

  3. Speak up when you see injustice. Stand for what is right.

  4. Stand for free speech.

  5. Open dialog with those that you have differing opinions.

  6. If you are able, make someones life better.

  7. Care for those who cannot care for themselves. This means the elderly and the weak.

These are just a few things that I do in honoring these men and women. Just looking at the list doesn’t do it justice. We need to do more.

The bottom line is we should respect these men and women. They should be thought about and their names should be spoken. If you know someone who has been killed protecting our freedoms you should share their story. Honor them by keeping their name alive.
